This piece was first sculpted in wax and clay, then moulded, cast, painted and framed. The moulding and casting process makes all 5 editions related, but, each piece is unique as each one is painted by hand. When I paint I am influenced by my mood, the light and the weather outside. Some are sunny and bright and some are stormy and dark.

I worked on this piece on and off for about 8 weeks, I had seen photos of it a couple of years ago and finally got to visit in 2022. I knew this had to be the biggest window I had ever created. To make a small one just wouldn’t do it justice!
The window detail was sculpted in wax and the stone in clay, once the sculpt was finished I moved on to moulding and casting. The casting process allows me to achieve the thin and fragile edges, the cracks and the weathered stone which are all part of the tapestry of Ireland’s beautiful landscape, history and traditions.
Finally, I get to move on and paint the finished piece to capture the life I see in the stone. When I paint I am influenced by my mood, the light and the weather outside. Some are sunny and bright and some are stormy and dark.
The framing is the final stage, it sets the piece apart from the world, helps me to focus and see the beauty in the stone without the distractions.
This sculpture of Kilcooley Abbey is seriously limited to only 5 editions, all made by me, here in the West of Ireland. Each edition is cast and painted by me which means each is an original piece and is not the same as any other.
