Commission Work

Have you ever thought about purchasing a commission piece? A one-of-a-kind piece of art that no one else has. Something that is personal to only you.

Or, maybe you’ve been searching for something that will bring life to a room or office space and an original piece of sculpture is what you need.

The Inspiration

Ireland. Land of saints and scholars… and sculptors: historical figures that once lived or worked in the churches, abbeys and houses that are dotted across the island of Ireland. Some of these ancient masterpieces lie in ruins; creating a mysterious feeling. Others, surprisingly are still occupied many years later. It is no wonder thousands of natives and tourists alike visit these places every year to take in the rich history of what once was.

I’m inspired by the stories surrounding these places, as well as the architecture used in the construction of them. The architectural features found throughout these buildings are a testament to the craftsmanship of the stonemasons of centuries ago.

The pieces I create are generally only a feature of the building itself – either a window frame, a door frame or an archway giving the viewer an opportunity to use their imagination to fill in the blanks. To wonder about, what happened here? Who lived here? What is the story behind this place? Sometimes, not knowing the answers to these questions keeps the mystery alive.

The Process

Each commission begins with a discussion, during which we create a basic brief that fits your request. I will then create some drawings in various sizes and provide a quote for the piece. If you decide to proceed with the commission, we will agree on the price, size specifications, etc., before I begin.

Once we are in agreement, I will begin the sculpture in wax or clay- this can take days or weeks to complete depending on the size of the sculpt and the level of detail involved. I will then make a mould of your unique piece which I will use to cast the final work. Finally, the sculpture is hand painted and framed before being shipped to you as a finished piece of artwork. Each edition is unique due to the casting process and the fact that each piece is hand painted. The seasons and light will influence the colours I use for each individual piece.

If you choose a commission piece, 50% of the price will be required as a deposit, with the final balance being due upon completion of the work, before delivery.

The total price including postage, and any amendments to your proposal, will be agreed upon before the project begins, so there will be no hidden costs or fees before shipping.

To request a commission, please email your details, and the details of the place you are interested in having made, to info@lucybutler.ie or else give me a call on +353 (0) 86 8985 754. If you have a specific date for completion or if you have a particular budget in mind, please let me know in your initial email, as well as any other information you think might be relevant.

Looking forward to hearing from you. I’m excited to see where this journey can take us.

Important Information

I am open to commission requests depending on availability and time frame.

There are 3 types of commission pieces:

  1. An exclusive one-off-piece created specifically for you, that will never be replicated.
  2. A limited edition run of 5 pieces, where you would receive the 1st edition.
  3. A request for a piece that might fit in with my existing collection, where you get the first edition of the piece.

Pricing is dependent on a couple of things:

  • The size and level of detail involved, such as how many hours the piece will take and the amount of materials required to complete it.
  • Whether option 1 (exclusive one-off piece), option 2 (1st of 5 limited edition pieces) or option 3 is available.

A rough price guide is as follows:

  • A small exclusive one-off piece would begin at around €2,000.
  • A 1st edition of 5 would start at around €1,000.
