Limited edition sculpture of the cloister at Clontuskert Abbey, Co. Galway. The frame is 37cm x 43cm x 4.5cm (14.5” x 17” x 1.7”).
Each piece is first sculpted in wax and then moulded, I then cast, paint and frame each one. The casting of each piece makes all 20 pieces related, but, like siblings each has it’s own personality and imperfections which make it unique.
I really enjoy the sculpture element of my work but each piece I paint is influenced by my mood, the light and the weather outside. Some are sunny and bright and some are rainy and moody.
I love them all.
It is believed that the Augustinian priory of Clontuskert was founded in the late 12th century close to Ballinasloe, Co. Galway. The monastery was hit by lightning in the 1404 so the ruins that we see today were restorations carried out throughout the 1400s. I approached this site from Ballinasloe, a little sign pointing me into what looks like an abandoned car park. I wandered down a farm lane with perfect hedging on either side. When the abbey came into view the remains of the cloister is one of the first things I could see. There are many other beautiful details in this abbey but the cloister stuck out to me, maybe I will be able to return and create some of the other details in the future!
Each piece is lovingly sculpted by hand in wax and then moulded, cast and delicately painted to capture the life of the building. The thin and fragile edges, the cracks and the weathered stone are all part of the tapestry of Irelands beautiful landscape, history and traditions. Everyone needs a little bit of Ireland to call their own.
All of my sculptures are limited edition, made in my studio in the West of Ireland. Please note that as each piece is handmade, slight variations from the images will occur.
