Ballylahan Castle, Co. Mayo

2,395.00

This piece is based on what remains of the gatehouse at Ballylahan Castle, near Straide in Co. Mayo.

This was a commission request from a client and we decided to create the piece based on how the gatehouse may have looked a couple of hundred years ago, before the second tower collapsed. (Only one still stands today.) After doing some research into the history of the piece, I sculpted this in clay and then moulded and cast out the final piece.

There will only ever be 5 editions of this work. Each edition is hand cast, painted and then framed by me, which means that each one is an original and slightly different to the next.

The frame is 49cm x 55cm x 4.5cm (14.5” x 17” x 1.7”).

Ballylahan Castle is situated near Straide and Foxford, Co. Mayo on the banks of the river Moy. It was constructed in the 13th Century by an Anglo-Norman family, the MacJordans and destroyed in the 14th Century by the king of Connacht, Felim O’Concobair. It has stood in ruins for over 700 years! Nothing remains of the inner keep or castle apart from the outline, but, a large portion of the walls of the Bailey (the enclosure) still stand, along with one tower of the gatehouse.

As this piece was a commission, I worked with my client to decide what form it was going to take. We decided to take an imaginative view and travel back to a time when the second gatehouse still stood. Using an etching dating from the 17th Century, some research and a visit to the ruins today, I came up with this design. I have to say, I am very pleased with how this piece turned out. It is the first time I have recreated what is no longer standing and I really enjoyed the challenge!
