Unique original – one of a kind
This artwork is the first in my new collection of experimental works – exploring the meteoric change in my life since I became a mother in 2024.
I think the story of the piece is best told by what I wrote behind the sculpture. It is based around my own personal wishes for my son.
Attempting to put into words how this piece came to be is not the easiest task ever.
It is many things, and different aspects are relevant to me at different times.
Firstly, it is made up of two sculptures, one (the smaller) of Mellifont Abbey – the first Cistercian monastery in Ireland, the second from Boyle Abbey which was a daughter house of Mellifont.
Both were founded in the 12th Century and both were dissolved in the 16th Century.
It seemed right to link these two pieces, but, something that just seemed so apt – to absolutely coincidental to ignore – is that, by total chance, Boyle abbey was the last sculpture I completed for my collection while I was pregnant and Mellifont was the first I created after I became a mother.
It was incredible to be looking at the link between my work and my life.
A physical and historical representation of myself.
When I started looking at the pieces in this way it seemed that the mother was of a later design.
More advanced – so, the child is larger than the Mother but less intricate, the life experiences have not yet filled in the window and created the complex pattern of life.
It is what we all hope for our children – a huge window, filled with opportunity, I hope to support my son to be able to choose whichever direction he pleases and create his own wonderful life.
Mother and child in one piece and in my life.
How incredibly special.
The sculptural elements of this work were first created in wax, moulded and cast separately, then joined and painted.
Fragile edges, cracks and weathered stone are intentionally created as a reflection of life. The two windows, joined yet facing away from one another, symbolising the unbreakable bond between mother and child, while also acknowledging the independence of separate lives.
The writing behind the piece was not pre-planned, rather written as I listened to some music and reflected on what I was thinking about while creating the piece. Truly from the heart.
This is an original, one-off artwork.
