The Round Tower, Killala, Co. Mayo, Edition 9

Sculpted in 2019, this piece is based on the round tower standing in the center of a small village called Killala in Co. Mayo.

This is edition 9/20 and is an earlier edition of the piece, you can see the lighter and brighter colours used typical of my earlier work. The piece had been out on loan to a gallery for some time.

There are many stories about round towers and why they were built, the generally agreed upon use being as a bell tower, not as a hiding place from Viking raiders. (I don’t think the Vikings, having been intelligent enough to build boats that sailed across the ocean would have been foiled by a too-high doorway…) They are, nonetheless, incredibly impressive structures that have been standing for over 800 years!

The frame is 39cm x 84cm x 4.5cm (15” x 33” x 1.7”).

This piece was sculpted in clay and then moulded, each edition is then cast, painted and framed. This process makes all 20 editions related, but, like siblings each has it’s own personality and imperfections which make it unique.
